Secretary Murphy currently serves as the inaugural Distinguished Chair of Innovation at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the world’s premier leadership institute dedicated to developing leaders of character. The Chair establishes relationships with the Department of the Army, Department of Defense, academe, and industry to ensure West Point’s strategic objectives are met.  Additionally, the Chair advises the West Point staff and senior leaders in the areas of innovation, engagement, and excellence. His previous roles at West Point include service on the Board of Visitors (2011-2016), resulting in a 50% increase of women students during his term, and Assistant Professor and Department Academic Counselor (2000-2003) in the Department of Law, leading the first-ever Law of War military academy competition at the Institute of Humanitarian Law in San Remo, Italy.

He is also a die-hard West Point Black Knights football fan.
